Eligible borrowers can have their remaining debt forgiven after making 10 years' worth of payments. Alternatively, if they have been in repayment for at least 20 years without receiving proper credit for student loan payments, they qualify for forgiveness.

President Biden, echoing his dedication to reforming the student loan system, expressed his commitment to providing Americans with opportunities and prosperity instead of burdensome debt. "From Day One of my Administration, I vowed to improve the student loan system so that a higher education provides Americans with opportunity and prosperity — not unmanageable burdens of student loan debt," said Biden.
